How It Works

Addition & Subtraction

To add or subtract fractions, a common denominator is required. The calculator finds the least common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators, adjusts both numerators, then adds or subtracts them. The result is automatically simplified.

1. Find the LCM of the denominators
2. Scale each numerator by the corresponding factor
3. Add or subtract the scaled numerators
4. Simplify the resulting fraction using the GCD

Example: 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12

Multiplication

Multiplication is straightforward: multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify the result.

Example: 2/3 × 3/5 = 6/15 = 2/5

Division

To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal (flip the second fraction), then simplify.

Example: 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2 = 1 1/2

Mixed Numbers

Mixed numbers (e.g. 2 3/4) are first converted to improper fractions before performing the operation. The whole part is multiplied by the denominator and added to the numerator. Results larger than 1 are displayed as mixed numbers.

Example: 2 3/4 = (2 × 4 + 3) / 4 = 11/4
